{Worth} What makes you worthy?

How do you define if you are worthy of people’s love and attention? Is it what you wear? How you look? How many friends just liked the new photo you posted? Maybe it’s the amount of stuff in your home or room? Or is it how many times you went to church this week? The amount of times you prayed? The amount of times you opened your Bible?

Let’s get real honest for a second. NONE of the stuff above matters if you are doing it to get the attention and affection of others. You know who wants our love and attention? We all know the answer… God. In everything we do there should be an awareness of God. We should want to go to church, pray, and read our Bible, but we should be doing these things because we want to grow closer to God. That means giving Him our undivided attention and having a moment where we can be selfish, but in a good way. This time with God is just for you and Him – no one else! We need these moments because, through the blood of Jesus, we are now worthy to be in God’s presence and grow in Him. He is worthy to be the one who we seek our love from.

Is it wrong to want attention based on how you look, what you posted, or the amount of stuff you have? I think there is a fine line. It’s okay to have nice stuff and look nice, but we cannot let these things take over our thoughts and measure how worthy we are of love or attention. Stuff doesn’t matter; it doesn’t come with us to heaven! You are not made worthy to people because of what you have or how you look, and if people do make you “worthy” to befriend them because of the outward appearance, they may not be the best examples to have in your life.

So what does make you worthy? God sees you worthy at any time, any moment, of any day to spend time with Him. There are no exceptions. He’s always willing to listen to His child. It doesn’t matter if your outfit is killing it that day or you’re lounging in sweat pants, He is always available.

The next time you are feeling the urge to buy stuff to feel better or are saddened by the amount of “likes” on your post, remember that none of those things make you worthy. What makes you worthy is being the best you can be through God who has washed away your sins and is willing to spend time with you whenever you need. How amazing is that? You are worthy.

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through Him.” John 3:16-17

As we begin this walk through the book of Ephesians let me begin by saying that I am not a scholar on the bible, nor do I pretend to be; in fact, if anything I feel completely under qualified, which as far as history has indicated for me thus far on my journey, is a good thing because it means that Christ can be strong in my weakness.  🙂  What I will offer though is personal revelation of what the Lord has shown me in His Word and how it has applied to me and can apply to you today!

Recently I’ve been in a season of the Lord revealing to me lies that I had been believing from unhealed circumstances in my past; those lies had formed foundations for patterns of behavior that were keeping me from moving forward.  Many of those lies had to do with my worth and value.  As we take a look at Ephesians 1 today, my prayer is that the Word of God will be a double sided sword that will cut through every lie you are believing about your worth and value, and that as His sword separates those lies from your identity, His truth will bring healing into every area where the lie has caused brokenness.

Ephesians 1:4 says that “Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes.”  This comes as an incredible encouragement to me because it tells me that we weren’t a mistake and that He is not looking at us with eyes of judgment.  So many times we think that God is up there ticking off all of our faults and judging us according to them as unfit or unworthy of His call.  This couldn’t be farther from the truth; in fact, He is cheering us on and sticking with His original plan for us to be holy and without fault; we may not be manifesting that truth today, but when we set our eyes on that truth that is what we will believe and live up to.

The next verse goes on to say that “God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ.  This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure.”  Whoa, did you just hear that?!  Not only did God choose us before the creation of the world to be holy and without fault, but He also chose long ago to adopt us into His family.  He didn’t “have” to do it, and it wasn’t because it was the “right thing to do”; He chose us because He wanted to, and not only that, but it gave Him great pleasure.  I don’t know about you, but that makes my heart leap.  Every lie that screams, “God doesn’t have a big plan for you”, “God doesn’t think you’re worth the fight”, “You don’t belong”, “God’s disappointed in/sick of/mad at you” is silenced with those few words, “He Chose”, and it “Gave him great pleasure”.

In verses 7 – 9 Paul explains how God adopted us by purchasing our freedom with the blood of His Son Jesus, and forgave our sins with His kindness and grace.  Just as He chose us in advance to be holy and without fault, and to adopt us into His family He also chose to pay the price for our sins before we even committed them; before we could earn or deserve it, meaning that our salvation had nothing to do with how good we were or how good we weren’t – it was a free gift.  This is so amazing because if we couldn’t do enough good deeds to receive it, we also can’t do enough bad deeds to lose it.  He trusts us and loves us enough to give it freely, which is why Paul’s response was to praise God for this grace in verse 6.  When we truly understand this grace it should cause us to want to move closer to God.

Next Paul goes on to explain God’s purpose in all of this, which was to bring His family together in unity as one family with Christ as the head, both the Jews who were the first to hear and trust in Christ, and then the Gentiles (the rest of us) who were adopted in.

In verses 11, 13, and 14 we also see that as adopted-in family we were also given an inheritance and the Holy Spirit is Christ’s guarantee that we will receive this inheritance.  If you think of it in terms of a contract, the Holy Spirit would be like the down payment or validating signature that guarantees our inheritance.  What that means is that we can know that we belong to Him now as we allow His Spirit in us to transform our thoughts, our attitudes, and our actions.  This transforming power of the Holy Spirit is the down payment, giving us just a taste of what we will experience in eternity in complete fullness, when we are not at war with our sinful flesh.  What an incredible inheritance, and what an amazing thought – that because we now belong to Christ and have His Spirit in us we don’t have to wait for eternity to begin to experience His likeness or to receive our inheritance.

The end of this chapter from verses 15 – 23 is a prayer that our “hearts would be flooded with light so that we can understand the confident hope he has given to those he called” (v 18), and in verse 19, that we would understand the “greatness of God’s power for us who believe him” (v 19).  What this tells me is that we must mix with our knowledge with both faith and an experiential relationship with Christ in order for it to have any affect on our lives at all.  We can know all of this as fact, but if we don’t chose to believe it, to really embrace it with every faculty of our being, than these promises will remain on the pages of our bibles rather than lived out and engrained on our hearts and lives.

My prayer for you is the same as that of Paul; that today you would reach out and grasp these promises with every fiber of your being.  These verses are life and truth, and today you may be feeling like these words couldn’t be further from what you’ve experienced thus far or are experiencing now in your life, your thoughts, your emotions.  In fact, chances are, everything within you is screaming, “yes, BUT…”, just as it was for me as I was fighting those lies about my worth.  However, I challenge you today to step out, to grab onto these truths, to CHOSE to believe them today, just as Christ deliberately chose you.  That is what faith is; choosing to believe when everything in your life looks opposite to what God says.  Think of the power in choice; Christ chose you, He chose to adopted you, He chose to give you His Spirit as an inheritance; now the ball is in your court, will you chose to believe Him, because if you do, it will transform your life.

{Love} Me Alone.

Once upon a time, in a town not so far away, an idea for a book was born. “Diary of an Old Maid” was the first title

I chose for it– I was twenty-four years old.

I am sure that sounds quite ridiculous, twenty-four seems a bit young to be labelled as such but at that time, I felt old.

My friends were finding “the one” and walking down the aisle before me. Regular questions of “Do you have a boyfriend?” or “Any men in your life?” peppered every conversation, or so it seemed, and I felt somehow that when I answered “no”

I came up lacking…

To be honest, my single state was certainly not my plan.

I recall in ninth grade being vocal that I wanted to be married and have a dozen children. In grade thirteen, my Art History teacher asked the class to share their life goals, mine was to be a wife and mother.

Through high school and beyond I was on the hunt for

“the one”. My other half. The person who would meet all my needs. That special someone that would complete me.

In my later teen years my plan was to be married by the age of twenty and have all of my children by the time I was twenty-five (clearly my desire for a dozen children had changed somewhere in there, likely through the influence of one of the boys on whom I had set my sights).

For various reasons, the dream of an early marriage was unfulfilled and I continued to question my value. I had searched for significance and found myself wanting. Like many, I believed that my worth was dependent on the wavering attentions of the opposite sex.

I desired love and approval and wholeness.

I began a journey that would take three years to begin.

A journey of identification and acceptance…

One of the first lessons I needed to learn was that I am “worth it”. Me. Alone. Without anyone else. I have intrinsic value. I am created in the image of the Almighty God. He knit me together in my mother’s womb and I am fearfully and wonderfully made (Ps 139:13,14). I love the visual of knitting – it is a two handed process with intention.

I have the handprints of God all over me.

Value is determined by the price for which one is willing to pay. I was bought with a price (1 Cor 7:23). The precious blood of the spotless lamb of God, Jesus (Jn 1:29).

A dearer price could not have been paid.

My value is immeasurable.

I am HIS. His because He made me. His because He paid for me. I am wanted and valued. ME. Alone.

What a thrill it was to embrace that truth and to accept that, with Him, I am complete. Lacking nothing. Complete in Christ. I stopped looking for my “soul mate”, my “other half” and became content just me and Jesus. (I recall saying out loud to God “I will get married one day if you dump a guy in my lap with a sign over his head that says “marry him” otherwise, I am good – just You and me.”).

I recently learned the history of this theory of the “soul mate”. In Greek Mythology (though we call them myths, the ancient people really did live by these beliefs) it is said that humans were born with four arms and legs, two heads etc.

Humans began to think they could become gods which angered the reigning gods, so Zeus split each human in half and they spent the rest of their days roaming earth searching for their other half. What a far cry from the beautiful love story that we have romanticized the “soul mate” to be.

How sidetracked I was through the years searching for my missing half. How much time I wasted being discontent and wallowing in my “incompleteness”.

I know I am not alone. Over the ages we have missed the full message of the Gospel. We often end our understanding at recognizing we are a sinner, in need of a Saviour. We accept Christ’s death as payment for our sins and rejoice that He rose again and is preparing a place for us. Our past is dealt with and our future is sealed but our present somehow lacks the vibrancy of a life redeemed unless we recognize our completeness in Christ and walk in it.

We need to be less concerned with how and when we find “the one” and more concerned with pursuing THE One. The lover of our souls. The author and perfecter of our faith. (Heb. 12:2).

How thankful I am that my journey began with three years of singleness. A time of tremendous growth and reflection. Though I wasn’t always content at the beginning, I wouldn’t trade those years. When I embraced my wholeness in Christ, I found purpose and contentment. Me. Alone.

{Life} One small step.

Do you ever struggle with purpose? Does my life really matter? What difference am I really making in this world? Do my daily decision make any impact on my future? My destiny? What about my children’s destiny or even possibly my grandchildren’s destiny? Surely what I do today won’t affect anyone that far into the future. Choices I make now? Today? Really?

I’m here to share with you a little story.

A revelation was made on this very subject this week in my living room. My mom was simply pondering about her input into my daughters’ lives, what had she done to contribute to whom they had become? Had any of the life choices she made, had an impact on her children’s destinies or even her grandchildren’s’ destinies?

One small step was really all it was.

One small step…Out the front door to go to a Bible study, when a friend invited her, when she could of stayed home to catch up on things, she was a busy mom of three.

One small step…Picking up and reading her Bible and realizing she was a sinner, stealing time away from her pile of chores.

One small step…Kneeling to pray and confessing her sins and becoming one of God’s children, where she could have reasoned and said “we’ll I’m a mom I’m really not that bad!”

One small step…Taking her family to church, showing them how to become part of God’s family, adding to her already large work load, preparing three children to head out the door early Sunday morning when it was probably her only day to “sleep in.”

With one small step My Mom changed the entire course of our family’s destiny. Our entire family found Jesus because of her and her willingness to seek and find. To take one small step. I can say she is the reason I still have my dad around. She prayed us all into the kingdom.

Because of her small step…I am saved, and a part of God’s family. I have a home in eternity. Because of her small step I grew up in church my whole life, being protected from many mistakes that could have drastically changed my life.

Because of her small step I had the privilege of going to a Christian school, where I eventually met my Godly husband, (we celebrate 20 years this coming December!) My Christian education rooted me daily into God’s word and from that was born my passion to homeschool our three girls. Because of her small step we have raised our girls in the church and protected them from life altering decisions.

Because of her small step her granddaughter, my daughter is the founder of this website, which daily brings you encouragement, strong conviction and powerful messages.

One small step…You have purpose. Your life really matters. You are making a difference in this world. Your daily decision will affect your future, your destiny and that of your children and grandchildren. One small step will affect those in your future. The choices you make now, today, forever, all begin with one small step.

{Faith} “If Only…”

I sat quietly with The Lord one Monday morning. That particular morning I was praying deeply about my future. I began thinking about all the things I would one day like to accomplish. The more I continued thinking, the more my “If Onlys” began to come out of my mouth.

If only… I had a job.

If only… I had more money.

If only… I was older.

If only… I had a boyfriend.

If only… I was more equipped.

If only… I were more compassionate.

If only… I were more successful.

If only… I was truly cut out for ministry.

If only… I had more wisdom and discernment.

IF ONLY…

I couldn’t stop myself. I just kept coming up with all these different “If Onlys.” More and more kept popping up. The Lord stopped me in my tracks. I could feel Him telling me that if I was to give my “If Onlys” to Him, He would begin to fill those so-called “voids” I was recognizing in my life.

As soon as I took a step back and gave God complete control of these areas if my life, I began seeing God fulfill each one of those “voids.” I am still waiting for some of them to filled, and in Gods perfect timing I feel that one day they will be, but the incredibly amazing thing is… I have learned that I don’t need these things to be filled for me to live a fulfilled life. I don’t need a car to start living. I don’t need a boyfriend to start living. I don’t need that job to start living. I don’t need all of those “If Onlys” to be filled to start living.

I am in a blessed season of living life to the very fullest. With God as my helper and guide. So ladies, in closing today, I challenge you to spend some time with The Lord. Identify the “If Onlys” in your life and hand them directly over to God. You’re NOT alone. God is always in control and always will be.

Don’t be stuck living life like I once was with all those “If Onlys” crowding the way to fulfilling your future destiny. Give them to God and live in absolute freedom.

{Beauty} Fading Flowers.

Can I be honest with you? You may be young and your skin beautiful and dewy, your hair thick and

glossy and your body toned and healthy but you are aging. It may not feel like it but it is true.

We live in bodies that are growing and changing but aging from the minute we are born.

I really don’t mean for this to be discouraging but it is a reality we all must face.

“For, all people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the

flowers fall,” 1 Peter 1:24

Our glory, our beauty will fade and fall. Our skin loses elasticity and gets saggy and wrinkly. Our eye sight

fades and we squint at pages we once read with ease. Our hair begins to take on new shades that

demand to be noticed (and dreaded).

It is easy to take for granted your youthfulness until a sweet child brushes through your hair and

declares in drawn out enthusiasm that you have “be..YOU…ti…ful white highlights” and the more she

brushes the more she finds. It helps that in her innocence she believes she is honouring you with a great

compliment.

Or in the arms of a precious toddler snuggling close and sighing in contentment over the soft pillow of

your body; which sends you frantically into ridiculous amounts of abdominal exercises to gain a  6 pack

or thereabouts.

We can try to fight the process but it is a losing battle.

Even the fit women will find their skin sagging and wrinkling. The sun exposure that creates golden

healthy tans in youth produce premature wrinkles with age.

The truth may be hidden, but underneath the dye the hair is still turning white and grey. One only has to

look at the roots which all too quickly divulge the secret. And one day a glance in the mirror reveals an

old woman with a ridiculously fake hair colour that is anything but flattering.

For those who can afford the extreme, there are tucks of all kinds available for the right price.

Now, I am not saying that using hair colour and make up is wrong. Nor is keeping fit or even, if you are

so inclined, to make permanent changes to your appearance. Enhancing, reducing, tucking. Fight the

aging process full force, if you like.

We can spend a lot of time and money in an attempt to keep our bodies looking young and vibrant.

Though, with observation I would say that it is a poor investment with a less that satisfactory return.

“Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing

of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a

gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.” 1 Peter 3:3-4

I admit that I hope my husband finds me attractive but I don’t want that tied to what I wear or how I

have done my hair and makeup. When the makeup has been washed off, my hair has been brushed out

and I have donned my comfy clothes, I want to know that he still thinks I am beautiful.

As women, we want to be beautiful. Not temporarily pretty but with an enduring beauty.

So what is an eternal beauty? “the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit”.

I have struggled with the inference of this image in the past. Quite frankly, I am not sure anyone who

knows me would describe me as gentle or quiet, in fact at one time I was shocked to be described as

blunt.

When I picture a woman with “a gentle and quiet spirit”, I think of my Sunday School Teacher, Arielle.

That was really her name. But unlike the stubborn, rebellious redhead under the sea, this Arielle was the

precious, patient mother of three boys. They were true, rough and tumble boys. Arielle was neither thin

nor heavy. She had a soft warmth about her. When she smiled, her eyes lit up and her face shone. She

was calm and patient (until that one day when she was pushed too far- I wouldn’t want you to think she

was perfectly perfect but she was real). Her hair was neatly piled with soft grey tendrils. She had a

gentle and quiet spirit and she was beautiful.

That is not me. I can be loud and bossy. I am passionate and exuberant. I am certain that I must

embarrass my children on a regular basis with my abundant personality. But gentle and quiet?

To be honest I have felt like a failure reading this verse. One day a lovely friend pointed out that it would

be a boring world if we were all quiet and gentle all the time but this verse wasn’t referring to

personality but spirit. I didn’t have to tame and subdue the vibrant personality I was given.

Her encouragement didn’t stop there but went on to explain that she saw my quiet and gentle spirit. My

daily walk and trust in God. My faith lived out through difficult times. The fruit of the Spirit growing and

overflowing in my life.

As I live in communion with God….

“…but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person

is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not

wither—whatever they do prospers.” Psalm 1:2-4

“For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and

enduring word of God. For, all people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the

grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord endures forever.” 1Peter 1:23-24

The grass may wither and the flower may fall but a tree planted by the water, the word of the Lord, is
